So…what is C.A.R.E.? The Consortium of Amateur Radio Experimenters, formed in
1989 in San Diego, CA, maintains a primary focus of providing the communities in
which we serve, a highly sophisticated, linked amateur radio wireless network.
System access is available for disaster relief groups such as the Amateur Radio
Emergency Service (ARES), which provides a corps of volunteer communicators to
handle "traffic" throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties in Southern
California. Affiliate stations privately own, operate and maintain amateur radio
repeaters and linked stations on the 50, 144, 220, 440, 900 and 1200 MHz bands in
the western regions of the United States.
We have now expanded our coverage area and communications effectiveness "from
coast to coast" by linking our local repeaters with other repeater and linked wireless
systems, utilizing VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) via EchoLink and IRLP
Gateways. Additionally, we now can communicate worldwide using this state-of-the art
technology. C.A.R.E. sponsors and operates an EchoLink Conference
Server/Gateway in Odessa, TX (*CARE_HUB*) Node #119705.
Other C.A.R.E. activities include applied research in digital form factor modes,
satellite communication, microwave, amateur television and spread spectrum
communications. All C.A.R.E. repeaters, links, remote bases, digital gateways, etc.
are privately owned and operated. Each owner and/or club of a C.A.R.E. affiliated
station bears the cost of construction and maintenance of their own equipment and
facilities. C.A.R.E. is not a club. There are no elected officers, politics, business
meetings, etc. We provide a valuable service to our respective communities during
times of emergency, and enjoy communicating with other amateur radio operators
on a day-to-day basis.
All C.A.R.E. affiliated linked systems and digital gateways adhere to a stringent set
of "best practices" operational standards.
